To successfully assist Métis Offenders as they work through the process of rejoining free society. To work with offenders during the family reunification process to ensure a stronger family bond is created. To reduce the rate of recidivism, thereby reducing the financial burden on Canadian taxpayers.

1. Contact your Native Liaison, Elder or Institutional Parole Officer to express your interest in the Section 84 process and the Aboriginal Community Development officers for Section 84 will be contacted on your behalf to arrange for a Section 84 consultation.
2. Complete a letter expressing your desire to return to your home community and submit the letter to your parole officer, Native Liaison or Aboriginal Community Development officers – Laura Baird or Monica McDowell. – Form letter is available from your Native Liaison – However, a letter in your own words is best. Include the line …”I am writing in regards to Section 84 which states…….” (See Section 84 below)
3. Sign the Section 84 Disclosure form available from your Native Liaison or Aboriginal Community Development Officer and submit that form to your Native Liaison or Aboriginal Community Development Officer.
4. The Aboriginal Community Development Officer for your area will present your letter to the community on your behalf and advise you of the outcome. Your community is asked to respond to your request in writing and the response will be presented to you upon receipt. – Institutional Parole Officers will also receive a cc copy of this response. A memo to file or Section 84 Community Assessment will be added to your OMS by the Aboriginal Community Development Officer which documents your actions in this process.
5. Once a response has been received, you, the Aboriginal Community Development Officer, Native Liaison, Parole Officer, and Community will begin working together to develop positive plans for your release.
6. Section 84 is a process driven by you – However, you must complete or be in the process of completing your correctional plan, be eligible for parole and have a home community which you are from.

SECTION 84 :
84. Where an inmate who is applying for parole has expressed an interest in being released to an aboriginal community,
the Service shall, if the inmate consents, give the aboriginal community
(a) adequate notice of the inmate's parole application; and
(b) an opportunity to propose a plan for the inmate's release to, and integration into, the aboriginal community.
